About the Junior Company

The Miami Dance Project Junior Company trains with the Miami Dance Project Company and performs with the company for certain shows. The Junior Company also rehearse under the direction of company members, and use learned choreography for local performances as well as local and state competitions.

The junior company’s official début was June 1st, 2008 when they performed for the Children’s Trust “Growing up With the Arts” show at the James L. Knight Center in Miami. March 7th, 2009 they performed with the MDP Company at the Manuel Artime Theater when the MDP presented “Earth, Wind, & Fire” before a large pleased audience, that included our guest children and parents from the North West Boys and Girls Club, and residence from the Palace.

The MDP provided transportation for those attending from the Boys and Girls Club, and after the show they were invited to join the dancers, Pam Mekras and Barbara Delgado to get pictures and ask questions. It was a rewarding evening for all. This event has made it possible for the MDP to become familiar with the North West Boys and Girls Club dance group and offer our assistance.

At the same time the children’s parents asked for the MDP to help their Church dance troupes, because they have little support coming into their neighborhood. Arrangements for the MDP to train the dancers in the North West area continue.

The Junior Company continue to perform with the MDP Company, however the Junior Company performs and compete September through June.  Success of the MDP Junior company program continues to be proven by their advancement into the Company, where they are salaried for performances, training the upcoming Junior Company, and teaching at the MDP summer dance camp. Many have received college scholarships for the respectable grades they were required to maintain, and dance proficiency that developed over the years with MDP.
