Organization Background

The Miami Dance Project (MDP) began programming in 2005 with yearly scholarships for girls and boys ages six to fifteen years for dance instruction at New Image Dance Studio. These scholarships are given to underprivileged and at risk children/young adults with a talent and a desire for dance training however do not have the financial recourses to foster their potential to advance in dance.
  
Artistic Director

 

Barbara Delgado initially began her training with her mother Maruxa Fajardo, a well known performer in Cuba and Mexico. At the age of seven Barbara began dancing professionally with an Afro-Cuban Production of Ochun Obayeye. Through this production she had acclaimed many awards from the A.C.C.A., an organization formed for Distinguished Hispanic Artists.

 

Barbara then continued her training in dance programs via Miami Dade County Magnet schools such as New World school of the Arts. During this time, she also trained and performed with the Florida Dance Theater, La Danza School of Performing Arts, and the Rita Montaner Dance Company. Thereafter, she pursued higher education at the University of Florida where she achieved her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.

 


Barbara expanded her dance knowledge by working with choreographers and teachers from major dance companies such as Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jose Limon and New York City Ballet. Barbara’s strong background in concert work and commercial dance has enabled her to work successfully in both worlds. She has choreographed for the television station Univision, as well as worked for artists such as Gloria Estefan, Chayanne, Jerry Rivera, Derrick Demitri, and music Video Producer, Billie Wooddrolf. In addition, she has been recognized in the front cover of the Miami Herald Newspaper for helping the community by offering self funding scholarships for underprivileged students.

Her unique blend of styles has been apparent n dance competitions through which she has won Gold and Platinum awards. For the past six years Barbara has been directing New Image Dance Company which has grown into 2 locations in South Florida, as well as continuing directing both studios. Barbara also heads the Dance Departments for Miami Dade County Public Schools such as Riviera Middle school and Academy of Arts and Mind Magnet School Program.

Lissette Dube

Lissette Dube was born and raised in Miami, Florida on July 8th, 1985. She began her ballet training as a young child in various studios. It was not till the age of nine that she found a home at In motion Dance Studio, under the direction of Renee Rich. Lissette trained in a variety of dance styles such as: classical and contemporary ballet, Limon and Horton modern dance techniques, jazz, tap, and hip-hop. Lissette was a member of In Motion's dance company; Artists In Motion, which was involved in a variety of non-profit performances. In addition to performing with her studio's company, Lissette was also a part of her high school's performing dance group. She has had the privilege of working with some of Miami's best and well known choreographers and teachers. Each of which have taught her a new way of executing and portraying different types of movement. Lissette is currently in her third year teaching at New image Dance Studio and continues her dance training under the direction of Barbara Delgado. This is her second year in Miami Dance Project and is very proud to be a part of such a talented group of dancers.

Noel Gonzalez

Noel Gonzalez was born and raised in Miami, Florida. He began dancing at the age of 9 In Magnet Schools like "Mays Middle" and "Coral Reef Senior High School". He continued dancing after school in studios, became a part of New Image Dance Center in 2003 where he trained with Director Barbara Delgado. He later than started working with Company's such as New Century Dance Company and Galaxy Entertainment, which opened the doors for him to work with Busch Gardens, Walt Disney World, "Non" Equity Performances in New York and in TV stations such as Univision, Telemundo, Mega TV and Sabado Gigante with artist such as Pilar Montenegro, and Thalia. He's been part of Norwegian Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean as a dancer where he had the opportunity to dance in Broadway shows in Hawaii. Now back in Miami, He's working with New Image Dance Center and their Summer Camp program. He continues his third year with Miami Dance Project, a Modern company under the direction of Barbara Delgado, Noel is grateful for his training and everything he has accomplished and is looking forward to see what the future has in stored for him.

Karen Hirst

Karen was born in New York, and started her ballet training in Buenos Aires, Argentina and continued in Dallas with the Dallas Metropolitan Ballet. Her professional career began with Boston Ballet II, Boston Ballet and the Washington Ballet where she performed leading roles from others. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Methodist University before joining Fort Worth Dallas Ballet. She currently lives in Miami with her husband and two sons, Aiden and Ethan. She is a guest with various companies while choreographing and teaching ballet for New Image Dance Studio and New World School of the Arts in Florida.

 

Lisa Beth Dressler

Lisa graduated from Nova-Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL with an educational specialist degree and is certified in Educational Leadership, TESOL, K-12, Varying Exceptionalities K-12, and Dance through classes. She also holds and Elementary Education degree from Miami-Dade Community College from Miami, FL.
