Organization Background

The Miami Dance Project (MDP) began programming in 2005 with yearly scholarships for girls and boys ages six to fifteen years for dance instruction at New Image Dance Studio. These scholarships are given to underprivileged and at risk children/young adults with a talent and a desire for dance training however do not have the financial recourses to foster their potential to advance in dance.
  
Artistic Director

 

Barbara Delgado initially began her training with her mother Maruxa Fajardo, a well known performer in Cuba and Mexico. At the age of seven Barbara began dancing professionally with an Afro-Cuban Production of Ochun Obayeye. Through this production she had acclaimed many awards from the A.C.C.A., an organization formed for Distinguished Hispanic Artists.

Barbara then continued her training in dance programs via Miami Dade County Magnet schools such as New World school of the Arts. During this time, she also trained and performed with the Florida Dance Theater, La Danza School of Performing Arts, and the Rita Montaner Dance Company. Thereafter, she pursued higher education at the University of Florida where she achieved her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.


Barbara expanded her dance knowledge by working with choreographers and teachers from major dance companies such as Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jose Limon and New York City Ballet. Barbara’s strong background in concert work and commercial dance has enabled her to work successfully in both worlds. She has choreographed for the television station Univision, as well as worked for artists such as Gloria Estefan, Chayanne, Jerry Rivera, Derrick Demitri, and music Video Producer, Billie Wooddrolf. In addition, she has been recognized in the front cover of the Miami Herald Newspaper for helping the community by offering self funding scholarships for underprivileged students.

Her unique blend of styles has been apparent n dance competitions through which she has won Gold and Platinum awards. For the past six years Barbara has been directing New Image Dance Company which has grown into 2 locations in South Florida, as well as continuing directing both studios. Barbara also heads the Dance Departments for Miami Dade County Public Schools such as Riviera Middle school and Academy of Arts and Mind Magnet School Program.

  
Vice President and Executive Director

Pamela Mekras began working in the fitness industry in 1983. Although her training was primarily in gymnastics, which she pursued through her twenties, she was always infatuated with ballet. Certified in many areas of fitness engineering, she was the coordinator of aerobics program for the Spa Health Club in Durham N.C.

When Pamela returned to Miami in 1992, she had her own traveling aerobics company which terminated in 2004 when she joined Barbara Delgado as a conditioning trainer for dancers.

In 2005 Pamela joined Barbara and the Miami dance project, Inc. and serves as Vice President and Executive Director.

In 2006 she founded and is the Artistic Director of “Ellithia” a professional cultural dance company and sub division of the Miami Dance Project, Inc.
